Bob Dye won his first race at the Cotati race track in April 1966, winning the checkered flag to boot. SCCA races feature multiple classes in each race (eg, AP, BP, etc) - but only the fastest overall driver in a race wins a checkered flag.
After swapping a few emails and phone calls, Bob Dye unexpectedly shipped the framed flag and dash plaque to me. How neat is that!!!
